Does yoga help with back pain?

When practiced correctly and regularly, yoga may help reduce or prevent back pain. Yoga can soothe back pain by building trust and awareness of your body, making movement feel less threatening, and providing connection with breathing and relaxation. There are also improvements to strength, flexibility, and mobility. According to a recent review, yoga is effective in reducing pain intensity and improving functional disability. Especially for those with chronic pain, a movement-based mind-body practice, such as yoga, can have additional benefits on the emotional aspects of back pain such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

It’s important to note that yoga participation isn’t for everyone and isn’t without risks. Certain yoga styles and poses can be problematic for those already dealing with serious back pain. When you participate in a yoga class, inform your instructor beforehand about any specific pain and limitations, and avoid making any sudden movements or stretching forcefully. Also, if you suffer from back pain, talk to your doctor before starting a yoga practice, as yoga may not be recommended to those with certain back conditions. Lastly, no worries if yoga isn’t your thing! Continue to explore movements that you enjoy and find rewarding.
